Fundamental Rules of Defense

  • Time favors defense.
  • Stay between your man and the goal.
  • Always recover to the hole (i.e. in front of the goal).
  • Stick leads.
  • Move your feet!!!
  • Never turn your back to the ball.
  • Communicate.  Who has the ball?  Who has help?
  • Identify shooters (strong and weak) to know who to focus on.
  • Play defense with your hands and elbows.  Get on hips.
  • Play physical.  Defend “the island” in front of the goal and don’t let your opponent get inside it for an easy shot.

Defense is 10% on ball and 90% off ball.
